When Arizona State Representative
Bob Stump tried to introduce a Bill that would regulate
cryonics he received a series of threatening emails and phone
calls. One phone call so severe he turned it over to the
police. In this article (below) Bob Stump is quoted as
saying "he has received demeaning messages from Alcor
supporters, and one call was forwarded to Capitol Police."
Dispute Swirls Around Bill
Regulating Cryonics

Negotiations on a bill that calls for state regulation of Alcor
Life Extension Foundation apparently have broken down.
Rep. Bob Stump, R-9, sponsor of H2637, on March 11 disputed an
e-mail sent to House members by Alcor’s lobbyist Barry Aarons.
Mr. Aarons urged lawmakers to vote against the bill because
Alcor had not been provided amendments he said were promised,
and that the cryonics company and the state funeral board “have
a verbal understanding that assures the funeral board will
conduct oversight of Alcor’s records…” and keep them
confidential.
Mr. Aaron’s letter said the agreement with the funeral board,
which under the bill would oversee the cryonics company, was
made regardless of whether the legislation passes.
“The funeral board and Alcor have come to this decision
amicably,” Mr. Aarons wrote. “The bill is a solution without a
problem.”
Funeral Board Director Rudy Thomas has maintained that Alcor’s
records should be examined to ensure that the company, which
preserves human remains in liquid nitrogen, follows requirements
of federal and state Anatomical Gift acts, and that laws
governing the treatment of dead bodies are followed.
The House Health Committee gave the bill a do-pass
recommendation Feb. 26.
In his response to Mr. Aarons, Mr. Stump says the committee
record proves there was no assurance that “a list of amendments”
would be included in the final version of the bill, and he
denied there was a verbal agreement between Alcor and the board.
Mr. Stump also said he has received demeaning messages from
Alcor supporters, and one call was forwarded to Capitol Police.
“Your client and their supporters have stepped up yet again
to impugn my integrity,” Mr. Stump wrote to Mr. Aarons.
Alcor stores the frozen remains of 61 people at its Scottsdale
facility, including the head of baseball star Ted Williams. A
Boston Globe report that the body of Mr. Williams' 35-year-old
son was taken to Alcor has not been confirmed. John Henry
Williams died March 6 in Los Angeles of leukemia. — Imagine a group of individuals so arrogant that they believe
